AngelicArtistry's GoToHeaven Jophiel's Game Question 59

The most dreadful and feared place in all of creation is ______, called also Gehenna, the abyss, and the bottomless pit.

It is a place so terrible that upon its gate is carved the heartrending command

"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here"

This visceral and enduring image of ________ as a place of eternal, irredeemable woe was given its certification in the teachings of the Christian Church.

However, it was not always so awful a place.

In early Jewish teaching, for example, the underworld was merely a temporary realm where sinful fouls were consigned for a period of purification and spiritual cleansing.

In charge of this rehabilitation were angels who served the Lord, albeit in a gruesome fashion.

Gradually, however, this original conception changed in favor of a far more brutal conception, the result of a stern eschatological outlook on the part of Christianity, in which members were given a stark contrast between the light of heaven and the impenetrable dark of _______ .

Angels still had their part to play, however, supplying such remorseless beings as the angels of destruction, angels of wrath, avenging angels, angels of anger and angels of torment to serve as masters and guardians of the abyss.

They eventually lost their jobs, though, as belief in the fallen angels developed; ______ became the home of devils and demons, who exist in their own torment and inflict endless punishment upon the damned souls given over to their wicked ministrations.

Angels still supposedly keep watch over the gates of ______ to ensure no wicked being or soul escapes its endless imprisonment.

They can, theoretically, even enter _____ should the Lord so choose to send them.

What is this awful place called?
